The Arlo Pro Security System with Siren is PCMag Editor’s Choice for outdoor home surveillance cameras because of its video quality, flexibility, and integration with other smart home devices. Arlo Pro is a product of Netgear. A fiercely strong brand. They have produced the world’s first and only completely wire-free, weather-proof, outdoor, DIY camera on the market.
Included in the 2 camera system box are: 2 white cameras, 2 rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries, 2 magnetic mounts and mounting hardware, 1 base station hub, 1 ethernet cable, 2 USB adaptors, and 2 USB charging cable. The cameras meet IP65 waterproof standards and are 1280 X 720 pixel video. The lenses are wide angle lenses, showing 130 degrees field of view.
Inside the hub is a 900 MHz CPU, 802.11n circuitry (2.4 GHz only), and a 100dB siren that can be programmed to go off when motion or sound is detected. You can adjust detection settings for sensitivity. The 802.11n Wi-Fi communicates with the base station hub with a range up to 300.’
The cameras have passive, digital, infrared motion sensor, which is a step up from an analog sensor. The sensors work up to 25 feet out. IR LEDs night vision is included and so is pan & zoom functionality.
The charge on the rechargeable batteries holds 4-6 months and recharge in 2 hours once plugged in. There is a mini USB port on the back of the camera for constant AC charge if you prefer.
There are easy to use sync buttons on top of the hub and cameras. 2 USB ports are on the back of the hub for attaching a USB drive or computer for long-term recording.
Two-way audio is included between the hub and each camera. Event triggers come from video or sound-triggers. Instant alerts are created and are sent via push notifications to smart apps on any smart phone, tablet or computer. Android or iPhone Arlo apps are available. 7 days of FREE event-based cloud storage for up to 5 cameras is included.
You can control the system through the web portal and or app for your android or iPhone or tablet. The portal has a battery level meter, Wi-Fi signal meter, motion detector enabled icon, play button for live video and audio feed, manual record button, snapshot button, full screen button and microphone button for 2-way audio communication. You can even custom name your cameras so you know which ones are getting triggered on your alert notifications
There is a mode icon to arm or disarm detection, create arming schedules, enable/disable alert notification (email and/or text), create custom rules for recording or enabling geo-fencing (to arm and disarm the system using your phone’s location), and also grant access to family or friends.
These wire-free cameras from Netgear much easier to install than cameras that require AC power. Furthermore, you don’t need a DVR for long term recording. All you have to do is attach a USB drive or attach a PC if you like, to store recordings indefinitely. The hub includes 2 USB ports!
The system connects with IFTTT (IFTTT = “if this then that”), Samsung SmartThings, and other home automation tools. The system works with the smart things app to work with other smart home devices such as triggering alerts when doors or windows are opened.
Another example of how the IFTTT can be used with your Arlo Pro System is to have a lamp turn on when a motion or sound triggered event occurs through a D-Link Smart adaptor plug for your outlet.
There is such flexibility and ease with this system to place the Arlo Pro in difficult to reach places, like trees. Alternative mount accessories are available for a small fee to make such mounts even better.
Another benefit is that Netgear doesn’t stop supporting its products when new iterations become available. The original Arlo and Arlo Pro cameras are interchangeable, meaning existing Arlo owners can add the new products to their current base station, or they can use their old cameras with the new Arlo base station hub
There are various stands, including swivel mounts. One type of mount includes a mounting mechanism that screws into the back of the camera. You could also purchase an optional charging station that
charges two batteries at the same time in 1/2 the time.
You can purchase extra cloud recording services. The Premier Service is $8.25/month gives you 30 days of cloud recording for up to 10 cameras. The Elite Service is $12.41/month gives you 60 days of cloud recording for up to 15 cameras
2 way audio allows you to communicate with someone at your front door or tell your dog to stop digging in the yard
The system requires a hub, some people prefer having only cameras without a hub. There is a 3 second lag between the time you hit the live button and the time the live feed is displayed. High winds trigger recordings until you adjust the motion sensitivity.
The system doesn’t give you 1080p video outside like the Nest Cameras. 1080p Arlo Cameras are available indoors and integratable into the system, however.
The 100db alarm is on the hub which needs to be inside attached to your router. This is probably not strong enough to scare off someone lurking around outside preparing to break into your car.
Night vision capabilities could be better. Other camera systems do produce better night vision. And on it’s own, the Arlo Pro system doesn’t provide smoke detection, carbon monoxide detection or live monitoring by professionals.
The Arlo Pro Security Camera system is the smartest and most affordable DIY choice. Viewing the live video streaming feed is very quick and simple, and it is incredibly flexible and easy to setup. There are many adjustable features through the Android or iPhone app or web portal.
The camera resolution of 720p is plenty sharp, suitable for most people’s needs. If you need 1080p outdoors for something like license recognition and recording, you could always set one Nest Camera for that and integrate that into your system at a later date, or even at the same time.
The free cloud recording of events for 7 days is sufficient for most people’s needs. You don’t need a pricey subscription for recording features.
I highly recommend that you give this system a try. You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it.
